upon river craft entering and leaving the port of
Kongmun. Its stronghold was well protected by means
of poisoned bamboo spikes hampering access by every
path but one, and bodies of pirates occupied a number
of points of vantage, signalling to each other by
means of gongs. It is now proposed to construct
roads and blockhouses and a genuine attempt will be
made to protect this important avenue of trade.

Mr. Albert Thomas of the International
Labour Bureau at Geneva passed through the Colony in
the first week of January. He spent a few hours in
Canton where he was entertained by some of the local
Labour Unions.

I enclose a copy of an extract from a
Canton paper on the subject of the retrocession of
Kwong Chow-van, the demand for which has recently been
renewed.
